June 1899 Elifli Hamlet Near Antep
2:15
You worked good, today.
2:23
You are Headman Mamo's son.
2:27
You will learn to be a headman and a shepherd in these mountains.
2:42
Dad, am I not going to attend the school anymore?
2:46
This is your school!
2:48
One day...
2:50
Even your home is going to be these mountains!
3:01
You are going to be careful...
3:04
..not to let this fire go out.
3:06
Otherwise, wolf won't be afraid and will come here.
3:11
You won't let wolves or jackals come near sheep or goats.
3:16
You're not going to sleep!
3:34
Are you going? Am I going to stay alone here?
3:40
Are you scared?
3:42
Stand like a man...
3:44
Do you understand?
3:46
When I stayed all alone in these mountains, I was younger than you!
3:50
Here! Under this sky!
4:13
You are going to guard the flock.
4:16
You stay, too...
4:18
You think I am your mother to entertain you?
4:28
Don't be afraid...
4:30
You'll do it.
4:39
If you leave the flock and come home...
4:42
This will be your last coming.
6:18
Black snake!
6:59
Karayilan (Black snake)...
7:59
November 1919 Town of Besni Antep
8:12
British came to Antep...
8:15
It is eleven months now...
8:17
I don't know what they are going to do...
8:23
Yeah.. Drink it... Drink it...
8:27
Thanks Uncle... Enjoy...
8:34
I wanted to be soldier like you... But, I couldn't...
8:52
Thank you.
9:14
9:53
Where is your owner, huh?
9:57
Where did they go, leaving you here?
10:17
I am sorry, sister...
10:20
Don't be afraid... I am not a bandit...
10:24
But, you tried to steal my horse.
10:26
I am not stealing your hourse.
10:28
I was looking at the broken wheel.
10:35
Yes, it is broken...
10:36
A piece of wheel came off while we were on our way...
10:40
Remzi Efendi went to look for it and he will be back soon.
10:44
Do you mind if I check it as well?
11:00
Ok.
11:03
You can check if you want.
11:18
Thank you.
11:19
Can I get my stick?
11:21
You never know...
11:25
Elvan! My girl!
11:28
Remzi Efendi is coming. Take it.
11:37
I couldn't find anything on the road.
11:39
- Are you alright? - I am fine, Remzi Efendi.
11:42
This gentlemen repaired the wheel.
11:59
Thank you...
12:00
Health to your hands...
12:07
Your pray is enough, pop...
12:09
Let the rest stay in your belt...
12:12
Good bye.
13:16
Mom...
13:18
Mehmet...
13:21
Son...
13:23
Mom...
13:26
My Mehmet...
13:31
Brother, welcome...
13:34
Senol...
13:37
May your brother give his life for you...
13:40
You look like a lion... Lion...
13:44
Are you hungry?
13:46
No, mom, later... Let me sleep for a while...
13:48
- Do you want me to prepare the bath for you, abi? - Come...
13:50
Later, let me sleep first...
13:52
Come...
14:05
Elvan...
14:15
Be at the dinner table after an hour.
14:22
What do you mean "We sat and talked?"
14:25
Why didn't you let me know right away that he returned home?
14:28
Dad, I swear, he came just now...
14:31
Ok, ok, shut up.
14:32
Mehmet, quite.
14:35
You are to blame actually... Move...
14:38
Where is he?
14:39
Inside, sleeping...
15:04
Has he eaten?
15:05
No...
15:07
He just fell asleep.
15:13
He won't wake up even if you fired a cannon...
15:16
Yes...
15:18
Just like his father...
15:35
It's not right to visit a cemetery so often...
15:37
I want you to end this.
15:39
Mom...
15:41
Your dad's death has been difficult for everybody in this house.
15:44
We all tried to handle our grief.
15:46
I am expecting the same effort from you, too.
15:48
15:51
It is 8 months now. Pull yourself together.
15:54
15:56
16:07
Your meal is getting cold.
16:10
I am not hungry! If you'll excuse me.
16:28
Thank you. I won't drink.
17:13
Welcome.
17:15
Thanks, dad.
17:17
Take a sit...
17:22
How are you?
17:24
I pray for your health, dad.
17:26
17:29
Thank you.
17:32
This is for you.
17:43
Boxwood, eh?
17:45
I saw the tree on my way.
17:48
I made it for you.
17:55
It looks like you didn't take good care of your vest.
17:59
Russian bullet.
18:01
It pierced through my vest and flesh.
18:03
I have been waiting for you return for a long time.
18:10
Mehmet...
18:14
Istanbul condemned us to the British...
18:18
The bandits who rely on the occupiers are on the mountains now.
18:26
Now, you are going to fight for you own land.
18:30
Dad...
18:33
I don't want to fight.
18:37
I laid down my arms.
18:38
It's over for me.
18:40
What else to do but fight?
18:43
Whatever I can do. I can be a shepherd.
18:45
Shepherd?
18:48
- At Sarikamis, I... - It may be Sarikamis, but this is Antep!
18:51
The war finds you.
19:08
Elvan, what are you doing?
19:19
Come on, let's go the living room.
19:22
I am fine.
19:23
I am talking to my dad.
19:26
My girl, you are moving away from reality.
19:30
I still have things to talk with my Dad.
19:33
- Your dad is dead. - But the man who killed him is still alive.
19:42
Mom...
19:46
If my dad had a son, would he be able stand without doing nothing?
19:49
No.
19:51
He would strangle and kill that Bozan bandit.
19:54
If he doesn't have a son but he has a daughter.
19:56
I am here.
19:58
I will do it.
20:05
I can't understand you anymore.
20:07
You don't need to, Mom.
20:09
You already forgot my dad.
20:19
Belkis Hanim?
20:23
Bring my drop.
20:33
So, you are going to Antep?
20:36
Yeah, I will go to Antep.
20:39
My dad called Selahattin Abi. He will come tonight, too.
20:42
- Our Selo? - Yeah...
20:44
Fine.
21:41
Anush Ana?
21:54
How many years?
21:55
- It was difficult for even Karayilan, right? - Yes, it was.
21:58
Come...
22:00
Praise be, you look like a young girl.
22:03
- Tell me, how are you? - I am fine, how about you?
22:08
Probably, my Margos came back from war as well.
22:12
I saw the fountain on my way to here.
22:14
Our stonemason Margos...
22:16
You know, he can't do without mending it.
22:19
Where is he?
22:22
He came sometime very late at night.
22:25
Probably, he didn't see the fountain's situation.
22:27
He said "Come on Mayrik, let's go." and I said "I won't go."
22:31
He went to Antep...
22:34
Jackass...
22:36
Antep, eh?
22:41
He said "He'll wait until I change my mind." Then, he'll wait for a long time!
22:45
I lived through so many things, but I still stayed here.
22:49
Why should I leave now?
23:47
Just take it easy!
23:49
Jackass Englishman.
23:51
23:55
You are smiling without even understanding...
23:57
Soldier, my ass...
23:59
24:04
I thought that British confiscated everybody's arms. Looks like that man hid his rifle...
24:17
Aren't you the policeman of this country?
24:20
Are we going to get a permission from the British?
24:22
Istanbul ordered us to obey the British.
24:31
So, are we going to get round the houses for a place two steps away?
24:34
Yeah...
24:36
Torture...
25:01
Are you ok?
25:20
- Mom -Elvan
25:24
I am sorry for the last night.
25:28
I may have crossed the line...
25:30
Elvan, I came here to make an agreement with you.
25:34
I want only one day from you.
25:36
We are going to forget the bad memories of the past...
25:38
and we are going to spend nice time together.
25:40
In old days, Mom and daughter, we had so much fun.
25:43
I missed those days very much. Didn't you miss them at all?
25:46
I did.
25:47
Then, first we will have a breakfast and then do the thing we loved most.
25:53
Ok...
26:07
Peace be with you...
26:09
Peace be upon you.
26:11
Master...
26:12
How much do you want to repair the thing on my foot?
26:17
These are useless, anymore...
26:19
It doesn't even hold the stitch... It will quit on me... Look at this thing...
26:24
Aren't you a master?
26:25
I asked and people showed you, I am sure you will find a solution.
26:28
I can't find a solution for this.
26:30
This needs Jesus' miracle, my son...
26:36
How much are these?
26:38
5 mecidiyes...
26:40
What?!
26:41
Are you trying to rip me off, you dirty infidel!
26:44
Don't defame Master Artin's yemenis. (Translator's Note: Yemeni is a kind of rawhide sandal.)
26:46
How are you Master Artin?
26:48
Thank you.
26:50
Peace be with you.
26:52
- Peace be upon you. - Peace be upon you.
26:54
What's going on?
26:56
Agha, If I were in Nizip, I would pay only 2 mecidiyes for the yemeni. (Translator's note: Agha means "Big brother or master" and is used for showing respect to elders)
27:03
Well...
27:05
These Yemenis take you to Nizip and bring you back here at least 10 times.
27:09
I think I know you, but...
27:15
I am Mamo's son from the village of Elifli.
27:18
Oh, Mehmet...
27:19
I couldn't recognize you...
27:21
Weren't you a soldier?
27:23
I just came back...
27:25
Come, Mehmet... Let's offer you a coffee... Come...
27:28
- Welcome, come... - Ok, let's drink.
27:32
Pisst! Hey! Hey!
27:35
- Do you have money? - No, I don't.
27:37
So, why are you here? Go and find some money...
27:40
Go on!
27:43
Find money? As if they are doling money in the streets...
27:53
Are we really going to have sew the first dress?
27:58
Mom...
28:00
I thought you didn't like that I rode a horse.
28:02
Of course, I don't like it. I bare it just because of you.
28:06
Cemile, use this fabric for Elvan's night dress.
28:10
And, that's for my sake.
28:14
This is all set Belkis Hanim. Please check this one and that one. These two fabrics are totally unrelated.
28:20
Just like my daughter, Cemile.
28:22
One side is a princess, and the other side is a boy...
28:32
Yes, Aram Efendi...
28:33
Master Faik, the commander wants a coffee.
28:35
This is my last 50 dirhem, Aram...
28:37
Nebahat Hanim wants it and I promised her.
28:39
28:47
Give us what you promised to her.
28:49
I promised, I can't.
28:51
We ordered and hopefully, will have it next week.
28:52
What are you talking about?
28:53
Didn't you hear me? I said the British commander...
28:57
The soldiers are right there...
28:58
If Master Faik said that there was no coffee, then it means there is no coffee.
29:03
Aram Efendi...
29:06
Don't interfere Mehmet.
29:08
29:11
Take the British and leave.
29:32
The commander says that he is in a hurry and can't deal with this right now.
29:35
Does he?
29:37
Don't think that I didn't understand what he said because I don't know the English language.
29:41
Sometime tongue don't tell the truth every time but the face always tell the truth, right?
29:47
Have a good day.
30:01
Is Margos here?
30:03
Margos?
30:05
Yeah...
30:06
I've never seen him after his first visit here...
30:10
So, he comes Antep, but don't even see his Master, eh?
30:14
You can ask Sona, as well, if you want to...
30:17
He always stops by Sona.
30:19
Is Sona in Antep?
30:36
Mehmet!...
30:38
Hello, Sona.
30:43
Come inside.
30:51
I... In fact...
30:54
... just wanted to ask how you were.
30:56
I won't let you go. Come on, come inside.
30:58
Come on...
31:11
Please sit...
31:31
The house didn't change much.
31:33
Yes...
31:34
It is as we left it.
31:36
We went to Istanbul with a couple of luggages anyways...
31:39
My father didn't want to take the furniture with us.
31:44
Is your father ok?
31:45
They are very healthy... My mother as well...
31:47
They didn't want to leave Istanbul.
31:49
Only I came back.
31:59
Do you want some lemonade?
32:01
Yes, I do.
32:03
You will add mint, too, right?
32:05
Of course, I will.
33:05
Are you alright?
33:08
If I could hold the tray straight, it wouldn't fall down.
33:10
It will only fall down on the tray.
33:18
I love these glasses.
33:20
They are the plainest ones...
33:22
They are broken now...
33:26
Even this morning, I didn't know if you were still alive.
33:32
Anyways... You are here now.
33:35
I saw you again...
33:37
And I saw you.
33:39
And you haven't changed at all.
33:41
Why don't you just say "you are old."?!
33:47
Yeah... Your hands are decrepit now(!)
33:50
I came here a year ago.
33:52
British found me from the school in Istanbul.
33:54
They had learned that I was from here.
33:56
They wanted me to come with them.
33:58
I am working as a translator.
34:01
I teach Turkish to the commanders.
34:05
Health to your hands. This is delicious.
34:07
Enjoy.
34:12
When I heard that you were in Antep...
34:14
I thought only Sona could know where Margos was.
34:17
Margos...
34:21
He stopped by here after he returned from his military service.
34:23
He was talking about leaving here.
34:26
He was seriously thinking about it.
34:28
He may be in Damascus.
34:32
Damascus, eh?
34:34
He said so.
34:38
If you'll excuse me...
34:40
I will stop by a couple of places in downtown and then I will go back to the village.
34:43
Come again...
34:44
I am here anymore.
34:46
I will... Have a good day.
34:55
Nowadays, young girls in Istanbul are also wearing these kinds of clothes and riding horses.
34:59
Did you have these when you were young, Belkis Hanim?
35:03
Of course...
35:04
Back then, we went to the island every summer.
35:06
I remember girls riding horses.
35:08
The island's weather is very beautiful.
35:15
- You can finish this today, right? - For now, it is ok.
35:17
You can take it off.
35:20
Such an interesting motif.
35:22
I've never seen one like this.
35:23
- What is this? - It is beautiful, isn't it?
35:25
They brought this from a village.
35:27
Village girls were embroidering these and they call it "Blacksnake."
35:30
Karayilan?
35:31
As they say, Karayilan was around 16 years of age...
35:34
You know the bandit Bozan?
35:36
He didn't allow him to enter the village.
35:38
They tell that he also scarred his face.
35:41
What happened to Karayilan?
35:43
Where is his village?
35:44
Elvan, you need to go to Doctor Osman.
35:46
I don't understand.
35:48
I took my last pill last night, you need to buy a new one.
35:51
I thought we would go together.
35:54
Would you please go right now?
36:16
Osman Abi, I am here...
36:25
I am here to see Doctor Bey.
36:27
He went to see a patient.
36:31
He will be here soon. Come in.
36:50
Have we met before?
36:53
No, we haven't.
36:56
I am Mehmet.
36:57
I am Elvan...
37:04
Are you ill?
37:08
I have a headache.
37:12
I hit my head.
37:15
Yesterday.
37:16
I hope you feel better soon.
37:18
Thank you.
37:24
Elvan, welcome.
37:26
Thank you, Osman Abi.
37:28
- So, you met Mehmet. - Yes, I did.
37:30
He is my old friend.
37:32
He was far away for years.
37:34
He just came back.
37:35
Elvan's Dad was a very respected and precious person.
37:38
Elvan grew up around us.
37:40
Actually, my mother's medicine finished. I am here because of that.
37:43
Let me check if we have it.
37:51
So, you just came back.
37:55
Yeah...
37:57
What do you think about the city?
37:59
It has changed.
38:01
It is not the same as before I left.
38:09
Unfortunately, Elvan.
38:11
British controls the ingredients of the medicine.
38:14
I can make it ready only by tomorrow.
38:16
Ok, then... I'll stop by again tomorrow.
38:19
Please tell my regards to Belkis Hanim.
38:21
I will. Have a nice day.
38:36
Our meetings are secret.
38:39
There are notables, civil servants, and merchants with different ideas...
38:43
Community's prominent figures...
38:45
We must be careful.
38:47
When I think about men in the suit just like you going underground...
38:52
You need to expand the limit of your imagination.
38:54
Add yourself, too. Come into our meetings...
38:57
We don't have anybody among us from villages or tribes.
38:59
We may need your knowledge and experience.
39:01
I mean for total fight.
39:07
What am I telling to a person just returned from a war...
39:09
...without even getting rid of the load of all those 7 years of fight.
39:12
I am sorry, Mehmet.
39:14
This coffee got cold. Order another hot one.
39:24
Dark...
39:25
Tall...
39:27
But, if he is a friend of Doctor Osman, he must be old.
39:30
No, he is young.
39:33
Mehmet Bey is younger.
39:40
I almost forgot...
39:42
I heard something magnificent today.
39:44
Tailor Cemile Abla...
39:46
...told me about a person who knocked the bandit Bozan off his feet.
39:49
- And his name is Karayilan. - Karayilan?
39:52
His name suggests that he is a brave man.
39:54
And they say nobody can stand agains the bandit Bozan...
39:57
And he stood against him when he was just 16 years old.
40:00
How does he look like? Tall?
40:05
A villager...
40:08
Asiye...
40:10
You still didn't get what's my problem is?
40:15
I say only Karayilan can knock this bandit off his feet.
40:19
Ok, I say the same thing.
40:20
Would it be bad if he was brave and, at the same time, handsome?
40:26
Ohhh, I got it...
40:28
You are thinking Mehmet Bey, and that's why you are pulling a face.
40:32
Maybe he will come to the tomorrow's party as well.
40:34
If he is someone prominent...
40:36
What party?
40:42
Asiye, untie this!
40:49
Welcome.
40:51
Thank you. You, too.
40:53
Yakup!
40:59
A gift to you from your friend.
41:01
Its name is Ayaz.
41:05
Thank you Selahattin. I am overwhelmed.
41:10
Ayaz, eh?
41:12
Praise be...
41:17
Come on...
41:18
Dinner table is waiting for you...
41:21
Come on, let's eat.
41:29
Selahattin thought me how to ride a horse.
41:31
We were exercising to change the horses while riding side by side on the field.
41:35
- Right, dad? - While riding?
41:38
Yeah... while galloping...
41:40
When Selahattin said "Ok", I was jumping to his horse and he was jumping to mine.
41:44
And I...
41:45
... learned the details of sharpshooting from him.
41:50
If I came back alive from the war...
41:52
It was because of him...
41:55
Tell them this...
41:57
What?
41:58
You remember that goat got stuck on the top of Yalikaya...
42:05
Your brother and I...
42:07
climbed next to the goat.
42:09
The goat got down the hill with our help but...
42:12
this time we couldn't get down.
42:15
In the middle of the night, Mamo Agha came and found us.
42:18
And he gave us a lesson by beating us.
42:21
You won't climb the place where you can't get down.
42:30
It is a party that Dr. Shepard is throwing.
42:32
The British Colonel.
42:34
I thought you would like to come as well.
42:35
Well, you are wrong, Mom!
42:37
But, I promised for both of us.
42:39
My dad never went to the parties thrown by British and he would never go if he was alive.
42:42
- And if he was alive, you... - One day!
42:44
I wanted just one day from you, Elvan.
42:46
Just like our old sweet days...
42:48
My whole efforts were for this.
42:50
But now I see that you considered even one day to be too much for us.
42:58
Selahattin, Ayaz is a nice gift.
43:00
But, I can't accept it.
43:02
What?
43:04
You gave me this horse...
43:06
to make me gird on and fight like you do...
43:10
As my father said...
43:13
I said I would fight arm to arm with Mehmet, Karayilan whom I ran after goats on the mountains.
43:23
I know war, Selahattin...
43:31
Sarikamis...
43:33
It was bad, eh?
43:39
We couldn't wash our faces for months...
43:43
We had been infested with lice.
43:46
Lice, ....
43:48
to protect themselves from the cold...
43:52
...had nested under people's scalp...
43:55
Our many friends...
43:58
...got crazy because they scraped their heads with their nails...
44:02
Thousands of friends...
44:05
...without even seeing one single Russian soldier...
44:07
died because of cold and hunger.
44:13
Then, they told us that the war ended.
44:18
You...
44:20
were my best friend, Mehmet.
44:23
With or without fighting...
44:26
You are still my best friend.
44:28
And here... This is your horse, Ayaz.
44:30
Goodbye...
45:08
Didn't you tell Selahattin?
45:11
Didn't you tell him that you will lead the youth in your village?
45:20
I raised you as a brave man...
45:24
I thought you how to be a fighter!
45:31
Your Karayilan doesn't want to fight anymore, dad.
45:34
I will go to the places where you left me when I was a child...
45:38
To the mountains...
46:13
Peace be with you.
46:16
And?
46:19
I want to buy a weapon.
46:23
I don't have any weapon.
46:25
But, I just saw you. You sold a weapon to a man at the back street.
46:29
Get this into your head!
46:31
I am not selling weapons and you didn't see it.
46:34
Look, if you tell this to the British, I swear I'll kill you.
46:38
Agha... How can I tell this to the British? I want the weapon to fire it at British...
46:48
What's your name?
46:50
Halim.
46:52
But they call me Nizipli.
46:54
So, you are from Nizip.
46:56
Yeah...
46:57
Do you have money?
47:03
Here...
47:10
What? Why do you laugh? Isn't it enough?
47:12
You can't buy even an underpants for your ass with this money.
47:16
Bye.
47:59
So, are you saying that Mehmet will lead the youth?
48:04
I raised him for these days.
48:07
They say that Karayilan is not the same old Karayilan anymore.
48:11
He doesn't want to fight...
48:15
Do you believe what you've heard or your headman?
48:21
We mean...
48:22
If we don't have Mehmet, we have Siro... He is also our headman's son.
48:40
Mehmet's silence is because he knows his duty.
48:43
Don't worry!
48:54
Get a move on, Memo Agha... They say that there are many signs before all hell break loose.
50:28
Come here. Don't run away... Come... Come... Come here.
50:33
Don't run away! Come!
50:36
Come here!
50:38
Catch the black lamb, first.
50:40
If you catch the black lamb, the rest will follow it!
51:07
What kind of kaval is it?
51:08
It isn't a kaval. It is a duduk...
51:10
- Kaval - Duduk
51:13
I have the same thing. It is a kaval.
51:16
Blow and see... How could be this a kaval?
51:25
Now, I get it... You don't know kaval, either.
51:28
My uncle don't allow me touch it.
51:30
It can be yours. I have another one.
51:42
Hey! What's your name?
51:44
Margos!
51:50
Margos...
51:58
Mehmet!
52:01
How are you?
52:10
I'm fine. You?
52:12
Fine...
52:16
So, you repaired the fountain.
52:18
How do you know that I did it?
52:20
Who knows who did it...
52:22
Am I the only one who dress stone?
52:24
Who else but you would repair our village's fountain?
52:28
You said it well, Mehmet... You are right...
52:32
It's your village's fountain.
52:34
It's not mine.
52:37
It has nothing to do with me.
52:39
What do you mean it has nothing to do with you?
52:42
Didn't we do the water conduit together?
52:44
Eh?
52:47
Didn't you make its stones?
52:49
Don't you remember?
52:50
When water started flowing the fountain, didn't we get happy together?
52:53
Yes, we did...
52:55
Yes, we did, but...
52:58
A lot of water flowed and gone from those fountains (Translator's Note: He means water it is all under the bridge now)
53:03
I am not the old Margos anymore.
53:07
I am not.
53:14
Grandsire, I thought I would have peace when I came back to my home...
53:18
But, now I see that everything is nested in each other.
53:21
My past and present are all tangled up.
53:23
Your true life...
53:25
is the one in which you are.
53:27
Leave the past behind, first...
53:31
The world is destroyed.
53:33
And it is came crashing down around you, too...
53:35
But, now
53:37
You will care what you see now...
53:41
I don't understand what I see.
53:43
Because...
53:45
You only laid down your weapon.
53:49
Unless the war in your heart doesn't end...
53:53
The war doesn't end.
53:56
Is there any way to end it?
53:58
You think all my years in this convent are is for nothing?
54:03
You will find the way...
54:05
...on your own...
54:08
If you turn your back to the sun...
54:12
You won't see nothing but your shadow.
54:16
First, you will hear everybody...
54:26
Go to tonight's meeting.
54:29
Hear what everbody say and...
54:32
... and see every path there...
54:45
Be patient, son.
54:48
Be patient so that...
54:50
...you won't sow a barren soil.
54:57
They say that this party is in honor of British Colonel but...
55:00
I think Mr. Shepard want to have fun...
55:03
Colonel is just an excuse...
55:05
May be you will have more fun than you expected...
55:07
I don't think so.
55:09
Come in.
55:13
What's up Huseyin?
55:21
Thanks for the medicine.
55:24
Have a good day.
55:34
Grandsire sent you a message...
55:37
Karayilan will attend tonight's meeting, too.
55:42
Karayilan...
55:45
The meeting is at nine o'clock. Go, tell him.
55:51
Agha... Anything you say... I am jack of all trades...
55:54
How many time should I tell you? There is no job... Go away!
55:58
Ok, ok, I got it...
56:43
Aren't you ready yet?
56:45
I told you that I wouldn't go.
56:47
Look, Elvan, we are prominent people in this city.
56:50
And these parties are very important in society.
56:53
There are more important meetings...
56:55
People who are against the occupation are coming together.
57:00
Where are these meetings?
57:03
I don't know.
57:06
How would I know?
57:08
57:18
Wear this.
57:20
You are coming with me.
57:56
Please give up your frowning attitude...
58:01
You want me to wear a fake smile like those people, is that so?
58:10
Belkis Hanim, good evening.
58:12
Hello Ms. Sona, how nice to see you...
58:15
We won't be able to see each other if there weren't such parties.
58:17
Our door is always open to you, you know that.
58:22
Thank you.
58:25
Elvan, right?
58:28
Huh? Yes...
58:38
Elvan! What is this clumsiness?
58:39
It's my fault... I wasn't very careful.
58:46
Your dress is stained.
58:51
I think Ms. Elvan won't be able to stay for the party.
58:53
Ms. Sona is right. You can't stay here like this. You are going home now.
58:59
Remzi Efendi has been waiting in the carriage.
59:25
Thank you.
59:28
Why are you laughing?
59:30
I remember our first lesson; it took quite some time to teach you how to say "Thank you."
59:34
But, you are very good now.
59:36
Thank you...
59:57
Colonel...
59:58
Hello...
60:24
British and Americans... Their purpose is to completely occupy the East.
60:28
They want to get hold of these fertile land and then the petrol...
60:32
Gentlemen, British has been here for 11 months.
60:36
Who did suffer because of them?
60:45
It is not a coincidence that Europeans are so advanced in industrialization and economics...
60:49
We can benefit from this and advance...
61:06
- Mehmet Bey - Elvan Hanim...
61:13
What's going on?
61:14
Did you call her?
61:18
Elvan! What are you doing here?
61:22
I want to join the meeting, too.
61:24
How did you come here?
61:25
I followed you.
61:29
I am following you since you left the house.
61:34
You will immediately go back to your home.
61:36
- I won't. - Elvan, you are making this difficult for me.
61:39
Osman Abi...
61:41
If my dad was alive, he would be invited to this meeting, wouldn't he?
61:45
I am the only person who can represent him.
61:48
Please...
61:50
- You always say that I am like my father, don't you? - Yes.
61:53
And you are as stubborn as he was.
61:55
Let me talk to the folks inside.
61:57
Let's see what they are going to say.
61:59
You were tonight's only guest, Karayilan.
62:07
Karayilan?
62:11
You call me Mehmet...
62:19
We run across each other for the second time, Mehmet Bey.
62:23
Actually, this is the third...
62:25
Third?
62:30
The first one is the time when we met at the mountain road.
62:33
You hit my head with a stick.
62:38
I am that bandit.
62:44
Is the order that British brought so bad? Eh?
62:46
See the article on the newspaper...
62:48
- [The British...] - As we talked...
62:50
Don't say a thing...
62:52
Because the security is provided, the trade has been increased.
62:55
What about hour honor? Is that increased as our trade, too?
62:58
- I have somethings to say, too! - Elvan!
63:07
Aren't women concerned about the situation of the city, as well?
63:10
Are the men only ones who complain about the occupation?
63:20
When you say the situation like this...
63:22
We should recognize Elvan Hanim, as well...
63:26
Excuse me, but...
63:28
I don't understand what is so good about the British?
63:31
They don't do anything about the bandits who attack the villages and kill people.
63:35
All of our young people are like Elvan Hanim...
63:38
They are determined to kick out the British...
63:40
They plan an action to protest the British every chance they get.
63:43
The occupiers will not bring an order here...
63:46
They will start brinkmanship sooner or later to intimidate the people.
63:50
Nothing like that happened until now.
63:53
How do you know it is not going to happen later?
63:59
Belkis Hanim, where is your daughter? I didn't see her.
64:02
There was a little accident and she had to go home.
64:06
Who are they?
64:10
They are wearing French uniform, aren't they?
64:14
French?
64:29
I don't care about the politics!
64:32
There is only one solution...
64:34
Young or old, we should arm!
64:36
Muhsin...
64:37
Maybe this is what occupiers want us to do...
64:39
Come on, Mehmet Bey! I say occupiers will cease to exist...
64:43
We will arm and kill anybody we see...
64:45
This first bullet you fire will play into their hands...
64:47
It will legitimize their use of violence.
64:50
We have to be very careful on our actions.
64:52
Let's see what Mustafa Kemal will say...
64:55
Karayilan, please, tell something.
64:57
Shouldn't we arm and kill them?
65:00
- You know the war. - Yes, I know.
65:03
And that's why I agree with Ahmet Muhtar.
65:05
We have to act thoughtfully.
65:07
Mehmet Bey, I am saying the same thing...
65:10
It is very possible to establish a prosperous future with British.
65:14
Therefore, the best thing for our situation is...
65:16
to adhere to the West...
65:18
- And the direct.... - Your fancy words don't mean anything to me, Irfan Bey.
65:24
I see that Ahmet Muhtar is alone about what he thinks.
65:26
Thanks for your invitation.
65:30
But, I think I don't belong here.
65:33
Have a good night.
65:40
Maybe, our discussions are pointless...
65:42
How do we know that the British won't leave our city soon?
65:46
I don't think so Tahsin Bey.
65:48
On the contrary...
65:50
I am worried that it will be worse soon.
66:19
Ladies and gentlemen, I want to make a small announcement.
66:28
The reason that we've organized this beautiful evening is in order to say goodbye to our dear friend the Colonel.
66:44
As a result of an agreement made between the British and the French governments...
66:49
From now on, our city will be under the control of French.
67:03
On behalf of myself and you, I would like to thank the Colonel for the friendship he has given us.
67:48
How can a man like you behave like this?
67:56
I've heard about you before I knew you.
68:00
They told me how you stood against the bandits and...
68:03
...how brave man you are...
68:09
Don't you see? You have an obligation to this as well...
68:12
Mehmet Bey, you have to fight!
68:18
Do you know anything about fighting?
68:22
You don't know anything, do you?
68:29
I don't know how to fight but...
68:33
But I know that people like you are called "coward!"
68:36
Mehmet Bey...
68:43
The British is leaving and the French is coming...
68:46
How could they hide such an important subject until the last minute.
68:51
It is probably in order to prevent the resistance.
69:02
Have a good evening!
69:05
Good evening...
69:10
It is a really beautiful party.
69:13
Yes, the Americans organize such events really well.
69:19
He says it is a nice party.
69:23
What's his name?
69:25
My name is Antoine Laros, madam...
69:32
I am here because...
69:34
... I speak Turkish very well, Ms. Sona...
69:39
I don't remember that I told you my name.
69:42
May we dance?
69:48
Gladly...
69:52
If you'll excuse us...
70:02
I know about you, of course...
70:04
Really? What do you know?
70:08
I know that you are a good translator...
70:13
and you dance very well.Surprising!
70:15
So, I am not the only one who is surprised.
70:23
Calm down! Calm down!
70:32
Nothing important... Just a stone...
70:43
A couple of rouges!
70:45
Don't worry... The British soldiers will handle it.
70:53
I hope so.
71:23
Run! Run! What are you looking at? Run!
72:15
Agha, it's you...
72:20
Go now!
72:23
Go on...
72:29
Come on, move!
72:32
Move!
72:45
- You immediately brought Elvan to home, right Remzi Efendi? - As soon as you told me, ma'am...
73:04
Asiye, hurry up!
73:09
Oh God! I can't unhook this clasp!
73:24
So, you are back...
73:26
You are still awake...
73:27
The book is very exciting...
73:30
What did you do? How was the party?
73:34
Good...
73:35
Tomorrow, the French will take over Antep from the British...
73:41
I am going to bed.
73:43
You go to sleep, too...
73:45
Sleep tight...
73:47
You, too, mother...
74:06
What's up? Are you going somewhere?
74:10
No...
74:11
Weren't you out enough tonight?
74:13
I don't understand.
74:20
It is obvious from the mud on your skirt...
74:25
Do you go to those secret meetings you were mentioning?
74:32
Mother, I made them up.
74:38
I got out of the house...
74:40
to stroll around...
74:43
I couldn't tell you, thinking that you would get mad at me.
74:46
Don't you even think about going out of this house tonight.
74:49
I will keep an ear to the ground!
75:10
Come in!
75:13
Doctor Bey, there is someone outside, saying that she has an urgent patient.
75:29
What are you saying?
75:31
Is it certain?
75:34
Tomorrow, this city will be under the control of the French.
75:37
What a pity!
75:48
Mother Anush...
75:51
What gives? You are still awake...
76:03
Are you alright?
76:07
I went to Antep today.
76:08
I found Margos...
76:10
- He told me that... - A while back..
76:13
A while back...
76:15
They told me "Anush, you have to leave here."
76:18
I couldn't.
76:20
Your mother Ayse stopped me.
76:25
These feet didn't see any other place...
76:29
They were born here, Mehmet...
76:33
If you told them to walk, they wouldn't walk...
76:38
My feet are just like me...
76:42
But, it is time now.
76:44
I have to leave...
76:48
I have to leave here...
76:49
Do you hear me?
77:09
Agha, welcome...
77:11
Have a good evening...
77:19
You will always keep the fire burning.
77:23
Wolves, jackals... They always look for the fire...
77:25
They wait it to die down...
77:27
So that the darkness will hide them...
77:31
...and encourage them...
77:36
You will always keep the fire burning.
77:39
You, too... Me, too...
77:48
I went to Mother Namus...
77:49
I came from there...
77:55
You go inside.
77:56
Stay Siro...
78:01
You are his father and I am his big brother.
78:03
And let him here what we are going to talk.
78:05
Anush said that she would leave the village.
78:12
She is not from us.
78:14
They are not from us.
78:16
All of us believe the same God, Dad...
78:18
We live on the same land.
78:19
If not today, then tomorrow, if not tomorrow, then the next day... They will support the enemy.
78:24
I know that they will stand against us with their weapons...
78:28
Not people like Anush.. Dad...
78:30
They all are the same.
78:32
- The innocent and the guilty are not the same... - They all are the same!
78:36
In war, there is you and the enemy!
78:38
You will know which side you are on!
78:40
You will draw the line! Either you are on this side or the other!
78:46
You will be on this side!
78:54
What will you do, if I don't, dad?
78:55
Are you going to take my soul?
78:57
Your name...
79:04
I will take the name that I gave you...
79:07
I swear...
79:09
If you don't do what I say, you are not my son "Karayilan."
79:56
What's going on?
80:08
Master Artin, come... This is our day.
80:11
I don't want to come with you... I will go back!
80:13
Come on...
80:15
Long live France!
80:17
Long live France!
80:38
The French is taking over the city from the British.
80:40
Who is giving what? Who did they ask?
80:42
Of course, they are not going to ask us...
80:44
Ottoman signed it. (Translator's Note: They mean the Ottoman Sultan)
80:46
The truce... The truce...
80:48
The French is taking over here, and the British is taking over Mosul.
81:02
So, we became their toys...
81:05
All of us...
82:26
Come here Mehmet...
82:27
What's wrong Mom?
82:29
There was a message from the city...
82:30
Your dad, without even I got a chance to ask where he is going, he girded up and left in great haste!
82:35
The messenger was Bilo's man... He said that the French came to Antep.
82:38
With their soldiers and arms...
82:41
- Let's go - I am coming Agha...
83:05
- Gentlemen! - Yes, sir!
83:07
We are here to govern this city on behalf of Republic of France...
83:11
Government of France, and the French Army.
83:15
Yes, Sir!
83:17
and to show our authority...
83:19
Yes, sir!
83:20
Now, do what is necessary!
83:22
Yes, sir!
83:31
Bilo, is it true?
83:33
Is it true that the French will take over the city.
83:35
They already did, Mamo Agha...
83:37
The British signed the papers...
83:39
Isn't there a brave man in this city who will make them swallow that paper?
83:43
Getting angry is no use...
83:45
We don't have arms...
83:47
We sent our men to the four winds... Let's wait their news... Come and take a sit and rest.
84:00
- Long live France! - We will get our rights!
84:24
You go to the direction of the post office, I will go to the direction of the market...We will meet ahead...
84:28
Ok, Agha...
84:29
Siro, We will find Dad and go back to the village. That's all.
84:59
Sergeant...
85:03
Have them haul down the flag...
85:07
Yes, Captain!
85:08
It is the order of General Staff.
85:12
Yes, Captain!
85:19
Let's go.
85:31
It is not time to wait...
85:33
Now, it is not time to wait...
85:36
Agha, we will wait and see and then we will fight them.
85:43
Uncle Bilo... Uncle Bilo... The flag...
85:47
At Akyol...
85:49
They are hauling down the flag at the mosque.
85:51
It is the French's order...
85:54
Agha, stop! Wait!
85:58
You stop! You wait!
86:00
For whatever you are going to wait...
86:43
This handover in line with the Skyes-Picot agreement between the victorious armies of the Republic of France and the United Kingdom will be very meaningful for our nations' future.
87:09
The French is hauling down our flag!
87:27
[They are protesting]
89:49
DAD!
90:09
DAD! DAD!
90:17
DAD!
90:22
DAD!
90:25
DAD!
